Severe Storm Damage?

6/7/2020 (Permalink)

A town flooding with many Green SERVPRO vehicles there to help restore after the storm Storm, Flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes... No job is too big. SERVPRO is Here to Help

As we seen on Saturday here in the Tri Cities Region, severe thunder storms can do a lot of damage. Storms can be anything from lightning strikes to flooding. It can tear out crops and plants, blow over mobile homes and rip trees right out of the ground. Some storms can produce hails the size softballs and can cause structure damage to homes and businesses, cars, people and other property.

It is important to be prepared and to stay safe before, during and after a storm.

  • Sign up for weather notifications
  • Create a family emergency plan. You might not always be in the same location when a sudden storm hits. Have an emergency meeting spot.
  • Prepare your home and put away any outside objects that can turn into a flying hazard during strong winds
  • Help your neighbors and make sure they are safe and secure.
  • Go indoors and stay away from windows. A basement is usually the safest place to hole up while the storm is raging.
  • Prepare an emergency kit with candles, drinking water, medications and some food in case the power goes out for many days.

Hurricanes, tropical storms and even typhoons are one of nature’s most powerful events. Each one causing massive destruction and mayhem.

While SERVPRO always runs towards the storms, we recommend everyone takes extreme caution and stay safe. Powerful winds can cause normal objects to become flying missiles. Torrential rain can cause rivers and basements to flood. Dangerous waves can cause rip currents and sudden shore erosion. Often times major storms leave the community without power and people in unsafe environments. That’s why SERVPRO is on standby and ready to come at a moment’s notice. We help restore the community, business and homes back to normal.

Are You Winter Ready?

1/4/2020 (Permalink)

A real snowman outside and wearing SERVPRO green scarf and hat set next to drying equipment Frosty is smiling because he is winter ready. Are you?

Are You Winter Ready?

Are you prepared for the upcoming cold weather? Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home, business or property if you’re not ready for it. From heavy rain and freezing temperatures to damaging winds, sleet or snow, all can cause serious and costly property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can take steps to be prepared  and help take the sting out of winter weather. To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions to protect your property before cold weather hits.

  • Roofs and gutters should be inspected to help ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves and other obstructions can cause a damming effect, which can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.
  • Inspect your property’s walkways, parking lot, and land for proper drainage to alleviate a potential flood hazard.
  • Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip really low. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open, allowing warm air to get inside and circulate around the pipes. If your building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting the water off at the main valve. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, turn off again and then turn your main water back on. This helps no remaining water freezes in the pipe.

Ask SERVPRO about completing a complimentary Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) for your home or business. The ERP is a no cost assessment of your facility and provides you with a plan to get back in business and normal life faster following a water damage disaster.

Preparation is key in making through any size disaster, whether it’s a small water leak, a large fire, or an area flood. The best time to plan for such events is not when the event happens, but well beforehand. No one ever plans on a disaster, but now, you can plan and prepare for it.

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency)

FEMA can assist homeowners if you went through a presidentially-declared disaster. If your damages are insured, you need to submit your insurance settlement or denial before a FEMA home inspection can be scheduled.

After applying for FEMA assistance, the agency will send someone from the organization to evaluate your home. In some circumstances, the agency offers financial aid to homeowners whose homes have been majorly affected by a disaster. After the Inspection and if you qualify for a grant, FEMA will provide you with a check by mail, or a direct deposit into your checking or savings account, and a letter describing how you are to use the money. The letter will generally suggest that you spend the money on services and items that will improve the state of your home, such as emergency restoration services. Those who were denied aid, however, can make an appeal.

To get assistance from FEMA call The FEMA Helpline (1-800-621-3362 / TTY (800) 462-7585)

How To Prepare For A Winter Storm

2/8/2019 (Permalink)

  • Make sure you have a 3 day supply of water (3 gallons per person) and easy to prepare food.
  • Make sure you have fire extinguishers in your home and that everyone knows how to use them.  House fires are much more common during winter storms as people turn to alternative heat sources
  • Purchase a NOAA Weather Radio so you can stay aware of the situation if your other communication sources are cut off.  Make sure it is battery operated and that you have extra batteries.
  • Make sure you have a good shovel.  You may need to dig yourself out before help gets there.  Or you simply may need to dig out your car!
  • Purchase a supply of flashlights (with batteries) and candles. And if you run out there are some creative items to use as candles... Like coloring crayons
  • Clean and inspect your chimney if you have one.  Make sure you have a supply of wood close
  • Make sure you have a generous supply of blankets.  If your power goes out, you will need as many as you can get!
  • Clear rain gutters and repair roof leaks.
  • Have an alternate way of cooking.  A small camp stove works well for short-term emergencies.  You may also consider a butane stove which is safe to use indoors (with a cracked window).  Make sure that whatever you choose that you have enough fuel.  Cook in a well-ventilated garage (like with the door open) to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors in your home.  The risk of carbon monoxide poisoning increases during winter storms as people use substitute heat sources.
  • Put weather-stripping on any drafty doors or windows.
  • Purchase rock salt to help you keep walkways safe.
  • Install good winter tires on your car and make sure the wipers work well.
  • Consider purchasing a supply of heat packs in case you need to go outside.
