Fire and Smoke Cleanup 101

Fire and Smoke Cleanup 101

Fires, even small ones, create a great mixture of cleaning challenges because of the ways smoke and flames interact with the environment. The materials being burnt, heat, oxygen, moisture and gases interact to form smoke residues, unique chemical reactions and unique soot. SERVPRO is the expert in the proper cleaning techniques for each unique item damaged caused by a fire.

Here are some great cleaning tips and tricks for you after you have suffered from fire and smoke damage.

Do:

  • Call your insurance agent as soon as possible
  • Restrict movement in the area to avoid soot from being ingrained into carpet, upholstery and fabric.
  • Use gloves when touching items. Sometimes the ash and chemical reaction with oils from your fingers will leave a permanent fingerprint on items.
  • If your electricity is off, remember to remove all your food and brace the doors open to help avoid strong odors
  • If it’s winter and your heat is off, winterize your pipes as soon as possible to avoid frozen pipes
  • Keep your HVAC system off until it can be cleaned and serviced by a professional

Don’t:

  • Don’t attempt to wash walls, painted surfaces, shampoo carpets, clothing, fabrics or upholstery without first contacting your SERVPRO professional. Sometimes using wetting items will actually permanently set the soot and smoke.
  • Don’t turn on fixtures, appliances or electrical switches if there is water in the structure from the fire rescue attempts. Wiring may be wet or damaged and cause electrical shock. First consult with a trained and reputable fire restoration technician.
  • Don’t consume any food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat or water. (They may be contaminated.)
  • Don't toss out items even if they seem destroyed. SERVPRO can often restore these items using state of the art techniques and equipment, including irreplaceable documents and pictures.
  • Don’t wait to call SERVPRO; your local experts on fire damage restoration. When fire damage takes control of your life, we help you take it back.

Limiting Mold Growth: The Do's and Don'ts With Water Damage to Help Prevent Mold

5/12/2020 (Permalink)

A woman looking at mold on her walls Found Mold?

Moisture control is the key to mold control. When water leaks or spills occur in doors - act promptly.... A prompt response within 24 to 48 hours and thorough clean up, drying, and/or removal of water damage materials will prevent or limit mold growth. It is pertinent to act fast with water damage, that’s why SERVPRO is always available 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Our motto is “faster to any size disaster.”

DO:

  • Stop the source of water

What To Do If Your Toilet Overflows… Act Quick!

5/12/2020 (Permalink)

exhibit of the inner working of a toilet tank valve Act Quick! Picture source: https://www.wikihow.com/Unclog-a-Toilet

Imagine this… You flush the toilet at your boss’s house and the water in the toilet keeps rising and rising. Not many other things can cause sudden and extreme anxiety. You think you’ll have to bolt out the door, change your name and move to another country. But wait… Act fast and you may just be able to save your dignity, keep your job and maybe even get that promotion.

Quick Steps To Prevent Overflow:

  1. Stop the water by removing the lid and pressing down on the rubber valve. This blocks any more water from going into the bowl.
  2. Lift the float so the water stops filling the tank
  3. Last resort, turn off the water at the back of the toilet.

Now that you stopped the flow of water it is time to assess the situation and deal with what caused it.

A toilet over flow can be caused by many things but usually a simple plunger can fix the issue. Try plunging the toilet. If that doesn’t work then it is most likely an issue in the plumbing and a plumber will have to be called. It could be a clog in a drain pipe or the septic system is backed up.

If the water did breach the toilet rim, you’ll need to call a reputable water restoration company. Toilet water is black water and carries bacteria and germs that can get into tiny crevices such as porous tile grout, under baseboards and inside walls and even through the floors and going down to lower floors; causing damage in places that are not visible or reachable with special tools. A simple mopping with bleach will not do the trick. You will need a trained water and sewage damage technician to test and treat all wet materials, properly dry the structure to prevent mold, decontaminate the affected area, and apply antimicrobial.

Destroy Odors with Deodorization

4/12/2020 (Permalink)

Lady plugging her nose with a distasteful expression Odors? Get Rid of Them For Good!

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke, and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems. Water and mold damage or other issues can also be a culprit for funky smells and odors.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard to reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

With technicians certified by the institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC) SERVPRO professionals can provide specialized services that rid your home or business of offensive odors left by fire, smoke, water or mold damage.

SERVPRO professionals do not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance: they seek out and remove the source of the odor.

Once the source is found, SERVPRO’s proprietary line of cleaning products is used to treat and prevent the odor from returning. Any restorable item in affected areas will also be professional cleaned and deodorized, including furniture, draperies, upholstery, electronics, art, flooring, walls, ceilings, HVAC air ducts and more.

Ask a SERVPRO professional to explain the various deodorization methods available and which one works best for you.

If you or someone you know recently suffered fire damage or some other accident that requires deodorization services, Contact SERVPRO immediately for a free scope.

Whether its fire, water, or mold damage or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, We’ll help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Flooded Basement? Here Are Some Key Tips

4/9/2020 (Permalink)

A guy standing in a flooded basement looking at a wrench in his hand Flooded Basement? Now What?

A basement can flood at any time; although this is the season we see the most flood damage because flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall and snow melt. Basements are naturally prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a structure and are generally built partially or completely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your Tri-Cities basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer pipe
  • Heavy rain causing exterior water to collect near your structure
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage damage
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
  • And many more

Have Questions about Basement Flooding?

Call Today - (509)943-9290

If flood water is not controlled rapidly and correctly, it can endanger your health and safety, and cause extreme damage to your building. Remember, If you act fast then there is a good chance you can restore the property and damaged materials instead of replacing them; saving you money and time.

KEY SAFETY TIPS:

  1. Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
  2. Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall.
  3. Use no open flames (there may be gas escaping from ruptured mains).
  4. Avoid floodwaters. Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged.
  5. Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by flood waters

Mold Remediation Process

4/1/2020 (Permalink)

Mold growth on Interior walls Mold Spores Spread

When there’s a water intrusion like a roof leak or leaking water pipe, mold can quickly become a problem in your home or business. Mold can cause health effects and can also cause significant damage to your property. Fortunately SERVPRO professionals have the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem. Although every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, the general mold remediation process stays the same. The following steps illustrate a typical mold removal process.

Call the Team in Green:

The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call your SERVPRO professionals. A representative will ask a series of questions to help determine the necessary equipment, resources and personnel needed.

Inspection and Damage Assessment:

Your property will be carefully inspected for signs of mold using technology designed to detect mold and hidden water sources. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view.

Mold Containment:

Various containment procedures will be placed to prevent the spread of mold and isolate the containment area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.

Air Filtration:

Specialized filtration equipment captures microscopic mold spores out of the air. SERVPRO technicians utilize powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mod remediation is in progress.

Removing Mold and Mold Infested Material:

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. Antifungal and antimicrobial treatments will be used to eliminate mold colonies from forming and help prevent new colonies from forming. Removing and disposing of mold infested porous materials, like drywall and flooring, may be necessary to mitigate heavy mold growth.

Cleaning Contents and Belongings:

SERVPRO professionals clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, and other restorable items affected by mold. They use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and sanitize your belongings. They are also trained to remove odors and deodorize using fogging equipment or other techniques.

Restoration:

Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may be removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet: or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various rooms in a home or business.

SERVPRO professionals understand mold, mold growth and mold mitigation. They have the proper training and special equipment and products to fix the issues.

Carbon Monoxide: A Silent Cold Weather Killer

1/15/2020 (Permalink)

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Can't be seen, Can't be smelled, Can't be heard. Can be stopped Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but at high levels it can kill a person in minutes.

Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide (or CO) is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels, like gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, and propane burn incompletely. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, each year more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning. It is estimated another 20,000 visit the emergency room, and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning. All people and animals are at risk for CO poisoning with some groups including unborn babies, infants, and people with chronic heart disease, anemia, or repertory problems being more susceptible to the effects of carbon monoxide.

An excess of CO, leading to CO poisoning, can result from faulty furnaces or other heating appliances, portable generators, water heaters, clothes dryer, or idling cars left running in garages. Taking some basic, precautionary steps can help eliminate the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Protect yourself by reviewing the following tips provided by the United States Fire Administration.

  • Have fuel-burning appliances, like oil and gas furnaces, gas or kerosene heaters. Fireplaces, and wood stoves inspected by a trained professional every year.
  • Open a damper for proper ventilation before using a fireplace. Never use your oven or stovetop to heat your home
  • Make sure all fuel-burning equipment is vented to the outside to avoid CO poisoning. Keep the venting for the exhaust clear and unblocked.
  • If you need a warm vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Never run a vehicle or other fueling motor or engine indoors even if the garage door is open. Make sure the exhaust of a running vehicle is not blocked with snow, ice, or other materials.
  • Make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow and other debris.
  • Only use barbecue grills outside, away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings. Some grills can produce CO gas. Never us e grills inside the home or the garage, even if the door are open.
  • Use portable generators outdoors in well ventilated areas away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building opening to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the home.

Are You Winter Ready?

1/4/2020 (Permalink)

A real snowman outside and wearing SERVPRO green scarf and hat set next to drying equipment Frosty is smiling because he is winter ready. Are you?

Are You Winter Ready?

Are you prepared for the upcoming cold weather? Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home, business or property if you’re not ready for it. From heavy rain and freezing temperatures to damaging winds, sleet or snow, all can cause serious and costly property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can take steps to be prepared  and help take the sting out of winter weather. To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions to protect your property before cold weather hits.

  • Roofs and gutters should be inspected to help ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves and other obstructions can cause a damming effect, which can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.
  • Inspect your property’s walkways, parking lot, and land for proper drainage to alleviate a potential flood hazard.
  • Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip really low. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open, allowing warm air to get inside and circulate around the pipes. If your building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting the water off at the main valve. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, turn off again and then turn your main water back on. This helps no remaining water freezes in the pipe.

Ask SERVPRO about completing a complimentary Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) for your home or business. The ERP is a no cost assessment of your facility and provides you with a plan to get back in business and normal life faster following a water damage disaster.

Preparation is key in making through any size disaster, whether it’s a small water leak, a large fire, or an area flood. The best time to plan for such events is not when the event happens, but well beforehand. No one ever plans on a disaster, but now, you can plan and prepare for it.

A: Contaminated water sources, biohazard, sewage, bodily fluids, large growths of mold, and certain materials like lead paint and asbestos require specialized restoration procedures.

Q: Why do you check for visible mold?

A: While mold may be found in small amounts almost anywhere, larger growths of mold may create health concerns, depending on the reaction of occupants to mold.

Q: I have a newly built home; Why do you test for asbestos

A: Washington state law requires certain materials to be tested for asbestos despite the year the structure was built

Q: What happens if you find mold, lead paint or asbestos.

A: If we notice a significant presence of these types of materials we will notify you and your insurance carrier so we can plan a proper method of remediation.

Q: Why is the equipment hot and noisy?

A: The process of drying takes special equipment to remove excessive moisture from your structure. It’s hot and loud but it is also necessary to reduce moisture, additional property damage and potential mold growth.

Q: Why is my furniture moved and blocked?

A: This is done to shield carpet and furnishings in the affected area and create space for air flow.

Q: What does the drying equipment do?

A: The purpose of the equipment is to remove moisture and bring the relative humidity level back to normal.

Q: Can I turn off the drying equipment?

A: It is important the equipment be kept running, unless a safety hazard arises. Turning equipment off will increase time required to dry your home and contents and may cause secondary damage.

Q: Can I move the drying equipment?

A: Do not move equipment unless you contact your SERVPRO Franchise regarding handling procedures.

Q: What do I need to do if a safety hazard arises or if the equipment malfunctions?

A: Shut it off immediately and call our office at (509)943-9290.

Q: Should I open doors or windows or change thermostat setting?

A: No. water damage restoration is a science. A water-damaged structure should maintain a temperature setting that stimulates ultimate drying environments. Leaving windows or doors open during dehumidification or your thermostat to low possibly will increase drying time and could potentially do further damage to your home and/or contents.

Q: How do I know when something has finished drying?

A: We will measure the moisture in wet materials, and we will set a follow-up date so we can monitor the drying process with special state-of-the-art equipment such as our thermal imaging and moisture monitors.

Q: Can I remove items from the area before you start working?

A: Sometimes we will have to open doors, cupboards, etc. during our restoration work. Please let us know if you prefer to remove personal or financial information from these areas before we start. If you have guns, ammunition, or valuable items such as jewelry, please remove these items from the areas we are cleaning.

Q: Why do I have to remove guns, ammunition, or valuable items?

A: Our crews are instructed NEVER to touch guns or ammunition. We are not in charge of items that you remove from the areas we are restoring.

Q: What if I have items that require special attention?

A: List any special heirlooms or collectibles that should be given extra special or extra delicate treatment due to their value or other reasons

Q: Can you replace, repair, or paint something?

A: Since we are neither insurance adjusters nor agents, we cannot authorize anything to be replaced, repaired, or painted. Our job is to preserve and protect, stop further damage from occurring, and restore damaged items to their prior condition when possible.

Q: How much will your services cost?

A: The exact price of restoring your property following water or fire damage is virtually impossible to determine on our first visit. A verbal briefing will be provided to you or your insurance adjuster.

Q: When will I receive the final bill?

A: The final bill will be forwarded to you and/or your insurance carrier upon conclusion of work.

Q: Can I go in the affected area?

A: All occupants and pets should stay away from the work areas to protect their health and safety during the work process.

Q: How can I learn about the safety levels of your products?

A: Material Safety Data Sheets for our products are available upon request.

Q: How long will the restoration process take?

A: Since each job is a little different, the actual time required to complete the restoration process is difficult to estimate. The technician servicing your home should be able to give you an estimate after the first day.

Tips to Help Keep You Safe From Kitchen Fires This Thanksgiving

11/18/2019 (Permalink)

Blaze and Stormy, SERVPRO's action figures, dressed up as Pilgrims SERVPRO of Tri-Cities West wishes you a safe and happy Thanksgiving

Each November, families gather to celebrate Thanksgiving by preparing a delicious feast, but if you don’t practice safe cooking habits, your happy holiday could quickly become hazardous in a blink of an eye. According to the NFPA, cooking is the main cause of home fires and injuries, with the Thanksgiving holiday being the peak day for cooking related fire emergencies. Review the following safety tips to help ensure you can enjoy a safe holiday.

  • Never leave cooking food unattended. Stay in kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave the kitchen, even for a short time, you should turn off the stove.
  • Remain in the home while kitchen equipment is in use. Use a timer as a reminder that the stove or oven is on.
  • Keep small children away from the cooking area. Enforce a “kid free zone” and make them stay at least 3 feet away from the stove or oven.
  • Purchase a fire extinguisher to keep in the kitchen year round. Click here to learn how to properly use an extinguisher for a cooking disaster.
  • Always check the kitchen after the meal to make sure all burners and equipment are turned off.
  • And of course, install smoke detectors or test them. There should be one by the kitchen, on each level of the home, and inside and outside of bedrooms.

SERVPRO of Tri-Cities West wishes you a safe and happy Thanksgiving and holiday season.

And remember, if you do have a kitchen fire and/or smoke damage, SERVPRO can make it "Like it never even happened"

Clean Homes Sell Faster: How to get your house ready for the market.

11/11/2019 (Permalink)

Front door and porch of a home. Clean Homes Sell Faster: How to get your house ready for the market.

Guest blog by EverStar Realty

When it comes to selling a home, the value of appearances can’t be overstated. The same property can go for wildly different price points depending entirely on the level of finish and cleanliness that’s shown while it’s on the market. That’s why it’s crucial to make sure you home is clean before those photos are snapped for the listing to make sure your home sells fast. In this article we’ll cover some of the cleaning basics and get your home shining bright for that first showing!

Step 1: Declutter

Before you truly begin to clean, it’s important to first go through the home and remove any clutter. Personal photos and belongings, while part of your home, distract buyers from being able to visualize the house as their future space. By simply removing items and clearing off spaces, your home will feel both cleaner and more spacious. It’s a win-win! This is also the right time to rearrange your furniture or remove excessive/oversized pieces.

Step 2: Deep Clean

Now the actual cleaning can begin! Set aside some time for this, because a proper job will take quite a bit of time. Focuses should be on the entryway, kitchen and bathrooms. These rooms see the heaviest traffic and are the most likely stopping points where buyers will pause to consider or discuss. Once you’ve done the best possible job, it’s time to focus on getting those floors spotless before moving on to cleaning everything else.

Don’t forget the back patio or front door! Buyers will see these spaces and it’s just as important to keep them clean. Alternatively, you can opt for hiring experts like SERVPRO of Tri-Cities West – their cleaning services are quite thorough! More on that point below though.

Step 3: Smells

Hopefully, your Step 2 knocked this one off the list. However, it’s still a great idea to go through your home (after you’ve been able to air out the smell of your cleaning chemicals) and simply sniff around. See if there are spots with unpleasant odors – in bathrooms, under sinks and (for pet owners) corners of rooms. To make sure your nose isn’t ignoring smells, be sure to leave the house and come back inside – sometimes you’ll notice a scent your brain was ignoring!

Step 4: Faux-Buyer Walkthrough

You’re at the finish line now. As far as cleanliness goes, your home should be shining bright! Take the extra step now, and go through as the Buyer. Go from the driveway and proceed through the house as one might when viewing it for the first time. What do you notice as you go? An outlet cover in need of replacement? Furniture which requires stepping around? A cobweb tucked in a high corner? Noticing these small details now, allows you to take care of them before a potential buyer even gets a glance.

Step 5: Painting/Staging (optional)

At this point your home is clean – mission success! However, for the best possible appearance of your home, consider taking this last step. By moving furniture in step 1 you already started the beginnings of Home Staging (we have another article for that here). Now that your home is clean, you can do a final evaluation. Perhaps the walls could do with a lighter neutral color, or maybe you see a good spot for a decorative plant. Judge for yourself and decide on your own finishing touches. Either way, you’ve got a clean house – and those sell faster!

That does it for this article! Now if you’re like most people, that Step 2 is a real pain. Especially if you’re showing a home which may be free of furniture come the time of showing. Would-be Buyers tend to notice any grime or untouched corners. That’s why it may make more sense for your situation to go with a professional. Enter SERVPRO of Tri-Cities West! Their residential cleaning services include carpet, hard floor cleaning, upholstery cleaning, pack out cleaning and odor removal. They’ll help you get your home to the level of clean you need for listing day!

Keep Fall Fire Free

11/4/2019 (Permalink)

Candles getting lit Fall Fire Safety

The fall season brings cooler temperatures, beautiful colors, and an abundance of outdoor activities. Plan ahead this season to make sure it is safe and fire-free.

  • Fall decorations, like dried flowers and cornstalks, are highly flammable. Keep these and other decorations away from open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters.
  • Keep emergency exits clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.
  • Teach children to stay away from open flames. Be sure they know how to stop, drop, and roll if their clothing catches on fire.
  • Remember safety first when choosing a Halloween costume. Consider avoiding billowing fabric. If you are making your costume, choose material that won’t easily ignite if it comes into contact with heat or a flame.
  • It is safest to use a flashlight or a battery operated candle in a jack-o-lantern. Use extreme caution if using a real candle. Place lit pumpkins away from anything that can burn and out of the way of doorsteps and walkways.

Not Every Hero Wears a Cape

10/8/2019 (Permalink)

October is Fire Prevention Month and an excellent time to examine the emergency preparedness plans for your home or business, including your fire escape plan. Do you have a fire escape plan? Have you changed your smoke alarm batteries within the last year? Are you prepared if a disaster strikes?

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sets aside a designated week each October to focus on fire prevention. The 2019 theme is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice your Escape!.”

According to the NFPA, once the fire alarm goes off, “you could have less than one to two minutes to escape safely” yet only 8 percent of people surveyed said getting out was their first priority after hearing a fire alarm. Creating, implementing, and practicing a fire escape plan for your home or business may be the difference between safety and tragedy. Make a plan today! Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone in your home or business enough time to get out.

How do you define a hero? Is it a person who is courageous and performs good deeds? Someone who comes to the aid of others, even at their own personal risk? A hero can also be someone who takes small but important actions to keep themselves, and the people around them, safe from fire. When it comes to fire safety, be a heroin your household or community.

Mold Cleanup and Remediation

8/26/2019 (Permalink)

Mold is everywhere in our environment and is a vital part of the ecological system. Molds have existed a long time yet in recent years due to increased knowledge about the subject, a new emphasis is given to the proper handling of mold contamination.

Water damages offer the opportunity for molds to grow and multiply since moisture and humidity levels increase in a home that has suffered water intrusion. Microbes can potentially amplify if a water damaged situation is left unmitigated. In general, a water damage left unmitigated for 24 to 48 hours can deteriorate from a clean water situation to a grey water situation or from grey water to black water. The longer water is left sitting, the more likely microbes can contaminate the environment and those microbes can make everyone in the property very sick.

Call SERVPRO today for an evaluation of your mold problem. SERVPRO specializes in mold remediation and cleanup

SERVPRO’s primary concern with any wet residential property is to prevent damages caused by water and moisture from getting worse, which could lead to secondary damage. Effective mitigation will reduce the amount of damage a property suffers and the cost of restoring the property back to its preloss condition. The goal of mitigation is to control the moisture and contamination. We will first check for the source of the water or moisture in the home. The source must be stopped before the drying process can begin.

We have two objectives for mold remediation jobs:

  1. Remove or clean mold contaminated materials, while containing mold spores and contaminated dust to the work area and
  2. Reduce contamination to a normal level as determined by a IAQ professional without spreading spores to clean areas.

Call SERVPRO today for an evaluation of your mold problem. SERVPRO specializes in mold remediation and cleanup and is the #1 local brand in Tri Cities, WA.

Leave the Hassle of Board-ups to the Professionals

Board-up after a fire or storm damage

Whether after a fire, storm or other structural disaster, boarding up damaged property is a burden that no one should ever have to go through – especially if it is your property that has been damaged.

Boarding up damaged property incorrectly could cause secondary damage such as moisture or animal intrusion, making the situation even worse. The process of boarding up after an unexpected damage can also be as dangerous as the damage itself.

SERVPRO of Tri Cities West can board up the damaged property and mitigate and remediate the original damage, providing you with peace of mind while making it “Like it never even happened."

The Science of Drying

7/29/2019 (Permalink)

specialty drying mats used to help dry hardwood floors

Did you know there is actually a science behind drying? Having the knowledge of physychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, SERVPRO professionals are trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages. If your business suffers a water damage, SERVPRO will:

  • Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet to help prevent secondary damage from happening
  • Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether are drying properly.
  • Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

What exactly does it mean to help “speed up Mother Nature”? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to the drier air in the surface of the material – but only if the air is drier.  The only problem is, nature often takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out.

SERVPRO of Tri Cities West has the tools, training and equipment to help Mother Nature along, Including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more. SERVPRO also uses state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and a proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.

It’s not only the equipment but the technology too! SERVPRO has developed DryBook™, a proprietary tool that provides real-time documentation and updates on the drying process and helps ensure industry drying requirements are met. With DryBook™ Mobile, you have the ability to know where your property is at in the drying process.

The bottom line? SERVPRO of Tri Cities West has the training and equipment to help make water damage “Like it never even happened.”

Cleanup When Wildfire Smoke, Ash and Soot Get Inside Your Home or Work Place

6/24/2019 (Permalink)

Wildfire Smoke Damage

Smoke , soot and ash can be invisible to the naked eye. Cleaning up smoke, ash and soot isn’t as easy as cleaning up dust. There are healthy and safety issues to consider while cleaning and getting rid of the wildfire smell inside your home.

What To Do To Help Protect Your Home From Wildfire Damage While The Nearby Fire Is Still Raging:

Wildfire smoke and ash can travel many miles. If you're not in immediate danger but smoke is permeating the air keep windows and doors closed, run an air conditioner but keep the fresh-air intake closed, use high efficiency filters to capture fine particles from smoke and the filter clean to prevent outdoor smoke from getting inside, use a portable air cleaner to reduce indoor air pollution, use a vacuum with a heap filter.

How Does Ash Get Inside The House?

Even though you may have closed your doors and windows and turned off any cooling or heating systems, ash can still come into the home in other ways, such as through holes in the ceiling, cornices that are cracked or missing with visible gaps into the roof space, fans and vent points that are not sealed, gaps in ceiling, and through openings around doors and windows.

Health and Safety Issues:

Smoke, soot and ash can be invisible to the naked eye. Fire cleanup such as cleaning up smoke, ash and soot isn’t as easy as cleaning up dust. There are healthy and safety issues to consider while cleaning these particles. Smoke can remain after a fire has been extinguished, which means that ash particles can continue to settle on and inside your house and on the outside for hours or even days after a fire.

Fire cleanup work can expose you to ash and other products of the fire that may irritate your eyes, nose, or skin and cause coughing and other health effects. Ash inhaled deeply into lungs may cause asthma attacks and make it difficult to breathe. Ash is made up of larger and tiny particles (dust, dirt, and soot). Ash deposited on surfaces both indoors and outdoors can be inhaled if it becomes airborne when you clean up.

Is Ash Bad For Your Health?

Smoke is a mixture of particles, water vapor and gases. But fine particles called PM2.5 are the biggest health concern. These are the particles that can be present in ash and soot.

Ash and soot can be irritating to the lungs and the skin. Breathing these fine particles deeply into the lungs can cause breathing problems and worsen pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma and heart disease.

Signs of short term irritation such as itchy eyes, skin irritations, sore throat, runny nose and coughing usually clear up in healthy adults once they're away from the smoke however people that are particularly vulnerable are children, the elderly and people with preexisting heart and lung conditions such as asthma.

To help protect you from the dangers it is advised to let professionals do the fire clean up and clean up smoke damage from wildfires or damage from a neighboring structure fire.

SERVPRO of Tri Cities West is equipped with the knowledge, protective gear and highly trained technicians to clean your home or office of any smoke, soot, and ash or smoke odors.

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency)

FEMA can assist homeowners if you went through a presidentially-declared disaster. If your damages are insured, you need to submit your insurance settlement or denial before a FEMA home inspection can be scheduled.

After applying for FEMA assistance, the agency will send someone from the organization to evaluate your home. In some circumstances, the agency offers financial aid to homeowners whose homes have been majorly affected by a disaster. After the Inspection and if you qualify for a grant, FEMA will provide you with a check by mail, or a direct deposit into your checking or savings account, and a letter describing how you are to use the money. The letter will generally suggest that you spend the money on services and items that will improve the state of your home, such as emergency restoration services. Those who were denied aid, however, can make an appeal.

To get assistance from FEMA call The FEMA Helpline (1-800-621-3362 / TTY (800) 462-7585)

Air Filtration

Specialized filtration equipment captures microscopic mold spores out of the air. SERVPRO uses powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in process.

Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Material

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and types of surfaces effect ed. Anti-fungal and antimicrobial treatments will be used to eliminated mold colonies from forming. Removing and disposing of mold infested porous materials. like drywall and flooring, may be necessary to remediate heavy mold growth.

Cleaning Contents and Belongings

Mold Remdiation

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

Mold Under A Sink

One of the worst problems that can arise while recovering from an unmitigated disaster such as a water tank spill or a storm that might have caused waterlogging is mold formation. Mold is bad for properties because these fungi feed on natural materials and cause biodegradation. The growth of mold in buildings, homes, and offices can lead directly or indirectly to a large number and variety of health issues.

Proper steps can be taken to mitigate or further reduce the mold issue that might have risen in a structure:

1.     The most important task that has to be executed when charged with a mold formation situation is to reduce and if possible, eradicated the high levels of moisture.

2.     The secondary task is to remove the affected material after the main cause of excessive moisture has been taken care of.

It has to be kept in mind that though molds are ubiquitous, their formation should not be tolerated as the health issues that they can cause are alarming and escalating. Molds are responsible for various kinds of allergies and respiratory problems. Molds in houses are usually found in areas which are damp and dark throughout the day, for longer periods of time.

However, molds can also arise as a consequence of a recent disaster in the area or any accidental spills which lead to accumulation of water or moisture in large amounts with no room for timely intervention. Mold removal is quite different from the technique of mold remediation. The former is quite difficult to achieve and is not an appropriate term to be used when dealing with practical real-life situations.

It is difficult to cure and remediate a situation leading to excessive mold growth without the use of proper tools and insights which come from experience. The resources required for such an undertaking are also beyond the scope of an individual who doesn’t face such a problem from time to time. Thus, it is advised to seek the help of a professional service which deals with such situations which provides reliable, efficient and adequate assistance.

The 24-hour emergency services that are hosted by them at www.SERVPROtricitieswest.com have been tried and tested time and again. The ability of an expert technician with the required certifications under his belt provides an assurance which cannot be adequately achieved when you have to deal with mold remediation all by yourself, ill-prepared. It might take less than 48 hours for the mold to set in and start growing at an exponential rate. However, with proper guidance and help from SERVPRO of Tri Cities West you can be sure that in such time your property will be mold free!

Tuesday Tip: Preventing Water Damage In The Summer

4/23/2019 (Permalink)

When you think of summer you probably don’t typically think of floods. Summer is the “dry” season after all. However, as the leading fire and water restoration company, we often see flooded basements and thousands of dollars worth of water damage in the summer. Although we like to stay busy, we don’t like to do it at your expense or for things that are preventable. Here are some tips to help you prevent such disasters from happening to your home.

Air Conditioners:

Your AC naturally has condensation but always pipe the condensation to the outside or a drain. If the unit leaks anywhere else besides the pipe then it needs serviced or replaced. Also the AC units need regular annual maintenance. Clean the pipes, coils, filter and replace the drain pan if it has any cracks. Consider replacing old or outdated units. Even a small leak can cause a costly disaster if it’s undetected and your home owners insurance might not cover the damage.

Yard Irrigation and Sprinkler Heads:

Sprinklers often cause water damage as well and are easy to prevent. Look for sprinkler heads that are broken and spraying on your home. Replace the sprinkler head or readjust the spray direction.

Look for leaks. Irrigation leaks are not extremely hard to detect however it does take an observant eye. Look for sink holes in your yard, fungus or moldy ground and differentiating water pressure from one sprinkler to the next.

Swimming Pools:

Make sure your swimming pool is well away from your house and watch for any leaks. When you drain your pool do it with caution and direct the water slowly and away from any structures.

May 4th Is Wildfire Community Preparedness Day

Home Ignition Zone

Whether you live close to a forest or in the desert landscape, wildfires is something that can devastate anyone.

Last year the Tri-Cities region experienced several wildland fires that burnt down homes and damaged structures.

"Wildfires across the United States have taken more than 100 lives and cost more than $25 billion dollars in property losses in just the last two years."- National Fire Protection Association

The National Fire Protection Association is a global nonprofit and focuses on reducing  the devastation of wildland fires through prevention with its "Firewise" program.

The Firewise program has tips to reduce the risk of your home or building catching fire from a wildland fire.

Here are a few tips for prevention:

  • Clear your Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) of any burnable material such as dead grass, leaves and sagebrush
  • Clean roofs and gutters of dead leaves, debris and pine needles that could catch embers.
  • Create fuel breaks with driveways, walkways/paths, patios, and decks.
  • Prune trees up to six to ten feet from the ground; for shorter trees do not exceed 1/3 of the overall tree height.
  • Tree placement should be planned to ensure the mature canopy is no closer than ten feet to the edge of the structure.

If you experience any damage from a wildfire, including smoke odors, SERVPRO can clean it up "Like it never even happened."

For more information, tips or to get involved to make your community "Firewise", visit nfpa.org, your local SERVPRO franchise professional or your local fire department.

Does Your Tri Cities Home Have A Mold Problem?

4/12/2019 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Smoke and Soot Facts

4/12/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Tri Cities West will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Tuesday Tip: Cleaning Your Dryer Vents Can Prevent A Fire

4/9/2019 (Permalink)

Spring is in the air! I think we are all very excited about spring and all the joys it brings. Spring brings renewal to the earth, new buds on trees, grass is getting green and birds chirping but it also means birds are building nests and there are a few things to remember... "Dryer vents are a perfect place for birds to build nests"... -Big Bird

FEMA reported that 34% of house fires are caused by unclean dryer vents.

Unclean dryer vents have caused a whopping $35 Million in property damage each year as well as injury and death.

We don't want that to happen to you or your home so please take precautions to reduce the risk. These fires are usually preventable.

Here are a few tips:

  • Clean the dryer filter before and after each load
  • Make sure the outdoor flap will open and is not blocked by obstacles.
  • Consider getting your vents professionally cleaned. Especially if they are not vented directly to the outside and not easily accessible for you. For more information and a referral to a great local company that can do this for you, you can contact your local SERVPRO.

We hope you have an amazing Spring!!!

Mildew in Your Bathroom? Why You May Want To Replace Your Bathroom Fan

2/22/2019 (Permalink)

Bathroom Mildew

Bathroom fans restore indoor air quality by venting damp air quickly outside, which reduces issues that are linked with high humidity such as mold and mildew, steamy mirrors and peeling wallpaper and paint.

To make sure this doesn’t occur, you will want to make sure you have the right size fan for each bathroom in your home. Not all fans are created equal and, as the #1 water and fire cleanup company in the region, we are often called to consult and remedy mildew growth and water damage in bathrooms that do not have the proper ventilation.

Below are some helpful tips and information to help you prevent such issues

Make sure you have the right size bathroom Fan

CFM: Finding The Right Fan According to The Bathroom Size

A fan’s capacity to move air is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). The larger your bathroom, the larger the CFM rating you’ll need. A fan should have a CFM rating high enough to exchange the air in your bathroom at a rate of 8 times each hour.

Determine the size of your bathroom (Length x Width x Height = Minimum CFM rating)

Or you can check the packaging at the store before you purchase the fan. Each bath fan will indicate the maximum square footage it can ventilate however, keep in mind that most fans are rated from 50 to 110 CFM.

Choose a fan that can move a minimum of 1 CFM per square foot of room.

Example: a 90 square foot bathroom would need at least a fan with a rating of 90 CFM or higher.

Helpful Tips:

We recommend choosing a bathroom fan that includes built-in heaters to improve warm air circulation and/or humidity sensors that automatically turn on the fan when it's needed most.

Consider replacing a light fixture with a model that has the light and fan combination. This will allow you to use the existing wiring and switch and it also turns the fan on whenever the light is on, which helps when there are people in the house that like to take hot and steamy showers without turning on a fan.

Close the shower curtain after every use in order to prevent mildew growth in the creases of the curtain.

If you already have mildew issues remember, SERVPRO of Tri-Cities West will make it “Like it never even happened.”®

Winter Weather Worries

2/14/2019 (Permalink)

Formation of Ice Dams

Winter weather can bring about more issues than just slippery roads and a sidewalk to shovel. In the Columbia Basin the temperatures dip below freezing and with all the record snow and ice we are getting this year, we are at risk for ice dams and frozen pipes, which can create a major disaster at your home or property.

FROZEN PIPES

Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in the cold areas such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.

A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the back-flow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.

To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross:

  • Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pools and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.
  • Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air circulate near the plumbing.
  • When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from the faucets.

ICE DAMS

Ice dams can be a little-known, but major problem during the snowy season. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still frozen ice. When the trapped water cannot flow or run into the gutter system, it can back-flow under the roofs shingles and into the structure's interior areas, as well as causing gutters and shingles to move or fall.

Icicles can be an initial sign of an ice dam, according to Travelers.com. To spot ice dams inside, "check for water stains or moisture in your attic or along the ceilings of exterior walls of your house. Water stains or moisture may be an indication that an ice dam has formed and water has penetrated the roof membrane."

Removing an ice dam as soon as it is found is vital to helping prevent damage to your property and can be done using heated cables, a roof shovel, or calcium chloride ice melt.

If winter weather causes water damage to your property, SERVPRO of Tri Cities West is only one call away. 24/7, ready to restore your property "Like it never even happened."

How To Prepare For A Winter Storm

2/8/2019 (Permalink)

  • Make sure you have a 3 day supply of water (3 gallons per person) and easy to prepare food.
  • Make sure you have fire extinguishers in your home and that everyone knows how to use them.  House fires are much more common during winter storms as people turn to alternative heat sources
  • Purchase a NOAA Weather Radio so you can stay aware of the situation if your other communication sources are cut off.  Make sure it is battery operated and that you have extra batteries.
  • Make sure you have a good shovel.  You may need to dig yourself out before help gets there.  Or you simply may need to dig out your car!
  • Purchase a supply of flashlights (with batteries) and candles. And if you run out there are some creative items to use as candles... Like coloring crayons
  • Clean and inspect your chimney if you have one.  Make sure you have a supply of wood close
  • Make sure you have a generous supply of blankets.  If your power goes out, you will need as many as you can get!
  • Clear rain gutters and repair roof leaks.
  • Have an alternate way of cooking.  A small camp stove works well for short-term emergencies.  You may also consider a butane stove which is safe to use indoors (with a cracked window).  Make sure that whatever you choose that you have enough fuel.  Cook in a well-ventilated garage (like with the door open) to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors in your home.  The risk of carbon monoxide poisoning increases during winter storms as people use substitute heat sources.
  • Put weather-stripping on any drafty doors or windows.
  • Purchase rock salt to help you keep walkways safe.
  • Install good winter tires on your car and make sure the wipers work well.
  • Consider purchasing a supply of heat packs in case you need to go outside.

Tuesday Tip: Carbon Monoxide; A Silent Cold-Weather Killer

1/7/2019 (Permalink)

Carbon monoxide is a gas you cannot see, taste or smell and it comes from common household equipment. According to ready.gov an average of 430 Americans die each year from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Often times it is the result of faulty, improperly used or vented consumer products like household appliances, such as gas fireplaces, boilers, central heating systems, water heaters, cookers, and open fires which use gas, oil, coal and wood. These all may be possible sources of CO gas along with engine-powered equipment, such as portable generators. As scary as this is there are precautions you can take to protect yourself, your family, your pets and your employees from these deadly CO fumes. Reduce the chance of CO exposure in your workplace or home by performing regular maintenance on equipment and appliances that can produce CO and install carbon monoxide detectors on every level, consider having all fuel-burning heating equipment and chimneys serviced annually by a professional and only use portable generators in well ventilated areas away from doors, windows or vents to prevent fumes from entering the home or building.

Does Your Tri Cities Home Have A Mold Problem?

12/21/2017 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Tri Cities Smoke and Soot Cleanup

8/15/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke ad Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Tri Cities Home.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Does your home have a mold problem?

Mold damage in bathroom

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

·        Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

·        Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.

·        Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

·        Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.

·        Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

·        Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Mold Remediation

7/6/2016 (Permalink)
